Humboldt County Board of Supervisors
825 Fifth Street
Eureka, California 95501
February 4, 2013
After close examination of the issues and concerns involved in negotiations between Humboldt County and Humboldt County IHSS caregivers, the General Assembly of the Green Party of Humboldt County concluded that the Supervisors’ decision to withhold the wage increase recommended by the impartial fact finder is unwarranted. We see no acceptable justification for denial of a desperately needed pay increase. Not only does your decision force IHSS caregivers to continue to live in unacceptable poverty, it also sustains and exacerbates a shortage of caregivers, particularly for clients who live in outlying areas.
The Humboldt Green Party has voted unanimously to support the following resolution in support of a wage increase for IHSS care providers. It is our hope that you will reconsider your decision and agree to grant the recommended pay increases.
Dana Silvernale County Council Chair Green Party of Humboldt County
Resolution in Support of Wage Increase for
In-Home Support Services Care Providers
Whereas, after prolonged negotiations between Humboldt County Supervisors and the County IHSS care providers, an impartial fact finder has recommended implementation of an immediate wage increase from $8.00 per hour to $8.75 per hour, an increase to $9.50 per hour the following year, and an additional contribution of $0.60 per hour to the Homecare Workers Trust for each hour worked; and
Whereas, unlike other County employees, the IHSS caregivers currently receive no pension or health care benefits whatsoever; and
Whereas, out of every $1.00 of wages paid to IHSS caregivers, the County’s share is only $0.17, the remainder coming from State and Federal sources; and
Whereas enabling the elderly and disabled the choice of staying in their homes saves the County, State, and Federal governments significant tax dollars and keeps families intact;
Therefore be it resolved that the Green Party of Humboldt County urges the Supervisors to implement the wage increase and benefit allotment sought by Humboldt County IHSS Care Providers.
